Queensland Tourism Industry Council
The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) can guide and support you through your tourism career journey.
Training available during high school
You can start your career journey at school with a range of training options to choose from or by taking on a part-time or casual job.
Entry level skills
Some basic skill sets and courses can give you a boost when you’re looking to secure your first job in tourism, such as:
- Responsible service of alcohol (RSA). This is mandatory if serving alcohol.
- Vocational Education and Training (VET). Refer to the school leavers’ guide to jobs and training for information on how VET can provide career pathways.
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships
School-based apprenticeships and traineeships enable you to work for an employer and train towards a recognised qualification while completing your schooling.
The Australian Apprenticeship Support Network and Apprenticeship Support Australia are the first points of contact for all apprenticeship queries.
Apprenticeships and traineeships combine training with working in a salary paying job.
Through the Free apprenticeships for under 25s program, the Queensland Government will cover the cost of your training when you choose a high priority apprenticeship or traineeship.
Training and study after high school
If you’ve finished high school or if you’re interested in a career change, there are many organisations and programs that can give you the skills needed to land your first tourism role, advance your career or transition to university.
- TAFE Queensland
- Griffith University
- The University of Queensland
- Bond University
- University of the Sunshine Coast
- Central Queensland University
- James Cook University
- The Hotel School
- Vocational Education and Training (VET)
Queensland Tourism Futures mentoring program
The QTIC Queensland Tourism Futures mentoring program provides an opportunity for tourism professionals to grow personally and professionally with the guidance of industry leaders.
Running annually from March to September, the semi-structured program offers flexibility for mentees to discuss their goals and aspirations with experienced mentors.
If you’ve recently embarked on a career change and are just starting out in tourism, or if you’re under 35 and studying or working within the industry, you may be eligible for the program.
Part-time and casual employment
During high school you could consider getting a part-time or casual job in tourism. Check out the range of opportunities available at Work in Paradise.
